I was at Duke a few weeks ago with some friends, when a detour inadvertently led us to a stunning photo exhibit of what today is Afghanistan and Pakistan’s tribal areas, including Kurram, where my father is from. British photographer Randolph Bezzant Holmes took them between 1910-1919. Beautiful, no?
I’d posted the one of the first pathan girl earlier, and a young woman named Anum left a comment I think is worth sharing:
Beautiful picture, but I can’t help and notice how sad she looks. Many invading colonialists forced native ppl to pose for photos….you can tell in this picture who is behind the lens.
